Special Hazards Fire Suppression Design & Engineering

Off-the-shelf suppression doesn't protect a data center, turbine room, or chemical process the same way it protects a warehouse. State Fire's special hazards engineering team designs, installs, and commissions suppression systems built to the exact hazard, occupancy, and code requirements of each facility — and backs every system with ongoing inspection and maintenance programs to keep it ready for the life of the building.

Every System Starts With the Hazard

Off-the-shelf fire suppression doesn't work in critical environments. A data center, turbine room, chemical processing facility, or high-value archive each carries a distinct combination of ignition sources, contents, occupancy patterns, ventilation conditions, and regulatory requirements — none of which a catalog design can address.

State Fire's special hazards design and engineering process begins with a thorough evaluation of the protected space before any system is specified. We identify the hazard, select the right suppression technology, and engineer a system built to perform precisely when and where it's needed.

Every design is reviewed for NFPA compliance, FM Global requirements, UL listings, and local AHJ standards before a single permit package is assembled.

What Our Engineering Process Covers

Our in-house engineers and certified designers manage every technical element of a suppression system project — from initial hazard study through final acceptance documentation.

Hazard and Risk Analysis

We evaluate the protected space for fire load, ignition risk, contents sensitivity, occupancy classification, and ventilation characteristics. This analysis drives every downstream design decision, from agent selection to nozzle placement to discharge sequencing.

System Design and Layout

Engineered drawings developed to manufacturer specifications and applicable NFPA standards. We size the system to the protected volume, account for obstructions and airflow, and document the design package for permitting and AHJ submittal.

Hydraulic, Pneumatic & Agent Calculations

Precise agent quantity calculations, cylinder sizing, piping design, and flow verification — performed to NFPA 2001, NFPA 12, NFPA 11, NFPA 17, or NFPA 750 as applicable to the system type. No rule-of-thumb sizing; every number is calculated and documented.

Detection and Control Sequence Planning

Suppression systems don't operate in isolation. We design the detection logic, cross-zone confirmation, pre-discharge alarm sequences, abort station placement, and actuation timing to match the hazard and occupancy profile of each space.

Systems Integration

Clean agent, inert gas, CO2, foam, water mist, and dry chemical systems all require coordination with the broader building environment. We engineer the interface between the suppression system and fire alarm panels, building management systems (BMS), HVAC shutdown sequences, and emergency power systems to ensure a coherent, code-compliant response.

AHJ Permitting and Code Compliance

We prepare complete permit packages and coordinate directly with the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Design submittals include engineered drawings, calculations, equipment cut sheets, and applicable code references. We support on-site review meetings when required.

Commissioning and Acceptance Testing

Once installation is complete, our engineers oversee final functional testing, discharge simulation, detection verification, and system documentation. Commissioning deliverables include a complete record set for AHJ inspections, insurance carriers, and internal compliance programs.

Installation & Commissioning

Engineering doesn't stop at the drawing set. State Fire self-performs installation on the systems we design, with certified technicians handling equipment placement, cylinder and agent storage installation, piping, detection devices, notification appliances, interface and shutdown wiring, and releasing panel programming.

Final commissioning includes functional testing of every circuit and component, discharge testing where applicable, and a complete documentation package turned over at project close.

Installation services include:

  • Suppression system installation per manufacturer requirements and NFPA standards
  • Releasing panel setup and programming
  • Cylinder and agent storage installation
  • Detection and notification device installation
  • Interface and equipment shutdown wiring
  • Functional and acceptance testing
  • Final commissioning documentation

Inspection, Testing & Maintenance

Special hazards systems require recurring inspection, testing, and maintenance to remain operationally ready. Deferred service leads to failed discharges, missed code deficiencies, and insurance exposure.

State Fire provides NFPA-compliant inspection and maintenance programs for clean agent, inert gas, CO2, foam, water mist, and dry chemical systems. Our technicians inspect cylinders, nozzles, piping, releasing panels, detectors, alarms, control circuits, agent levels, pressure readings, actuation components, and system documentation — and provide a complete written report after every visit.

Applicable inspection standards: NFPA 2001, NFPA 12, NFPA 11, NFPA 17, NFPA 750.

Who We Engineer For

Special hazards engineering is relevant anywhere water-based suppression would cause unacceptable damage or simply can't address the fire risk. State Fire designs systems for:

  • Data centers, server rooms, and network operations centers
  • Power generation facilities — turbines, generators, control rooms
  • Industrial and chemical processing — dust collection, paint booths, flammable liquid storage
  • Telecommunications infrastructure and command centers
  • Healthcare and medical imaging environments
  • Aerospace and defense facilities
  • Museums, archives, and cultural institutions
  • Automated warehouses and logistics operations
  • Mining operations — surface, underground, and mobile equipment
  • Oil, gas, and refinery processing

If your facility has a hazard that doesn't fit a standard sprinkler design, that's precisely where our engineering team starts.
